Bringing About Transformative Growth

While everything in life is clear-cut, the law is only sometimes so—that's the love for the grey and the yearning for balance, where justice seeks to find harmony amidst conflicting truths.
Meet Rajeshwari Hariharan, a Lawyer with Master's Degree in Biotechnology and a Bachelor's Degree in Law. She has been practicing as an advocate since 1993 in various courts including Delhi High Court and Supreme Court of India.

The Beginning

“I started my career with general civil law, interwoven with a smattering of criminal practice. My early days were spent reeling under the heat of the scorching sun and running from one district court to another, taking dates, researching, preparing matters, being admonished by the court, by seniors and even clerks for silly careless mistakes which I now look upon and laugh,” recollects Rajeshwari.
She went on to set up her firm Rajeshwari & Associates in 2008, advising on matters related to patents and other intellectual property rights, including providing patentability assessments, drafting technology transfer agreements, know-how agreements, licenses, and assignments.
“We also prosecute patent applications, particularly in the fields of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and electronics, AI, mechanics etc.,” she adds.

Marching Ahead

With a team of about 30 lawyers, patent agents included, the firm also conducts due diligence, searches, file patents, at the Patent Office. They have a very strong litigation practice at the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts across the country and also deal with arbitration cases involving commercial contracts.
Adv. Rajeshwari authored numerous articles and speaks at various conferences and seminars across India and globally. Recognized as one of the leading patent lawyers in India by Chambers and Partners and Intellectual Asset Management magazine, some of her career achievements include
  • First patents in India for genes and microorganisms.
  • Representing Natco Pharma Limited in India's first-ever challenge to EMR (Exclusive Marketing Rights).
  • Winning the landmark Basmati and Neem patent revocations filed by the Government of India at the US Patent Office.
  • Securing India's first-ever compulsory license, granted for sorafenib, a drug used to treat liver and kidney cancer.

Setting Benchmarks

“The number of women lawyers or firms run by women at the helm is far less; rather outnumbered. But I had an enormous amount of conviction that I was doing the right thing, with each of these decisions. Hard work does pay – only when you work very hard,” she shares.
“It is our mission to become a trailblazing legal powerhouse recognized globally for redefining excellence in client advocacy, innovation, and impact,” she adds.
