Dr Nitu Kumari Nootan,
Ambassador of India's Folk Culture
Music does not have the limitation of
language or geography yet it is the best
form of expression and unites people
beyond boundaries.
One of India's pride and music icons is Dr Nitu Kumari Nootan, whose notes resonate across boundaries. A PhD in Music, she has been a disciple of Bharat Ratna Late Lata Mangeshkar and Gurubhai Late Pandit Ram Singh and Late Pandit Markande Mishra of Banaras Gharana. Today, she is an acclaimed folk and semi-classical singer and “A” graded radio and Doordarshan artist. Besides being a prolific singer, writer, researcher and administrator, Dr Nitu has been spreading the fragrance of folk culture and traditions of Bihar, both at the national and international level since the last 29 years.

Awards and Accolades
She is recipient of several prestigious awards and
accolades. She was conferred with the Sangeet Natak
Akademi (SNA) Award by the Hon'ble President of
India under the aegis of Ministry of Culture,
Government of India.
She is the first woman from Bihar appointed as “Rajya Guru” by the Sangeet Natak Akademi for promoting and teaching Bihar's folk songs under the 'Kala Deeksha' series' with the selected accompanists and trainees.She was also the first woman from Bihar to be nominated for the second consecutive term as a Member of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (New Delhi) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India (2015 to 2021). She was Member, Central Board of Film Certification, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India from 2021-2023.
She is a registered and recognized artist of ICCR (Autonomous Body of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India); honoured with Lokvid Samman by the North Central Zone Cultural Center (an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India), Vindhyavasini Devi Bihar Kala Puraskar facilitated by Hon'ble Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Nitish Kumar; Senior Research Fellowship Award by the Center for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Rashtra Shiromani and Lata Mangeshkar Swar Kokila Samman.

- Her international recognitions include - Bharat Utsav Samman, Consulate General of India, Dubai (2023) Bhojpuri Wing Award, Oman, Muscat (2014) Mahendra Mishra Global Award, Dubai, UAE (2018) Bharat Utsav Award, Dubai, UAE (2023). She is the first woman from Bihar to be awarded Lok Kala Samman by the Hon'ble President of Mauritius Shri Kailash Purryag in 2013.
Social Contribution through Art:
- Influenced by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's dreams of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat', for the last 30 years, Bhopuri Swacchta Abhiyan was launched to build a clean and prosperous society. Through art concert and live performances throughout the national and international level she is establishing national integrity and unity; helping artists struggling with economic crisis and disparities and providing them financial assistance for the preservation and promotion of folk culture of Bihar. She launched a massive campaign against the increasing commercialization and obscenity in Bhojpuri Music of Bihar, UPand Jharkhand.
